After a dire European Championship in 1988 and a successful but unspectacular World Cup qualifying campaign, Bobby Robson's side inspired cautious optimism with wins over Brazil, Czechoslovakia and Denmark. Even when losing to Uruguay, England played some impressive football.
Sadly, in their final warm-up against Tunisia, they were abysmal. A brilliant strike from Abdelhamid Hergal gave the Africans a lead they rarely looked like relinquishing. Only a late header from Steve Bull spared England's blushes.
